Ok.Quoi?! should not be missed
Every year, a "week long festival of independent music, art, and culture" takes place in Sackville, drawing people from all over Canada and sometimes other parts of the globe. The festival encompassing the realm of independent music is called SappyFest, while the arts are covered at Ok.Quoi?!. Ok.Quoi?! is presented by the Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre, and focuses on contemporary art, video, audio, and new and independent music. It takes place July 26 - August 1.
The planned festivities, workshops, and artists who will exhibit their work for the 2010 festival have not been yet publicly announced. In 2008, however, the festival featured studio artists in residence at the Struts Gallery, activities for kids, unusual workshops such as creating a "honk symphony," barbecues, broadcasts at 106.9 FM CHMA, roundtable discussions, screenings of video works by artists such as Eric Walker and more, creative lab workshops instructing various forms of art, a craft fair, and a closing concert featuring bands such as Hard Drugs, Colonial Quarrels, Calm Down It's Monday, and Old Man Luedecke. The artists who visit the festival to give talks and workshops, or to display their work are local - meaning from New Brunswick to northern and central Nova Scotia.
Currently, the Struts Gallery has published a call for proposals on its website. Local artists can submit proposals for "offsite works," for audiences in public spaces in Sackville, and can incorporate installation, media, print, or performance.
Most of the events at Ok.Quoi?! are free, and if the schedule of events and workshops is similar to the schedules of the past, it is sure to be a great line up. If you are in Sackville for the summer, attend this event to support local art, and bring your kids, your families, and your loved ones. If you're not in Sackville, consider coming back to the marshlands for Ok.Quoi?! - you won't regret it.
