Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser. Universities and colleges from all over Canada work together to raise funds for cystic fibrosis research. On the first Saturday of the Fall semester, over 700 Mount Allison students fundraise in Greater Moncton, Amherst, Shediac and Sackville to SHINE as part of a nationwide Shinerama fundraiser. On this Shine Day, student shiners set up at various businesses and public areas shining shoes, painting faces, playing instruments, singing, squeegeeing windows and washing cars to raise awareness and funds for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Student volunteers can also take it upon themselves to raise money for their university’s campaign any time of the year. For example, Jana held a yard sale in her hometown of Dalhousie, N.B. this summer, raising $471 for Mount Allison’s campaign.

Jana Arsenault – Harper Hall Shine Rep

“I really enjoyed volunteering for Shinerama this year. It is a great opportunity, because it allowed me to get creative and fundraise the way I wanted by hosting events like yard sales and carnivals. I also think it is important to educate people about this terrible disease and it is truly amazing to see how generous people are when they are made aware of this. Not to mention that it is super exciting to take part in Shine Day and to see everyone help fundraise for the same goal you’ve been working towards all summer. Above all, the most rewarding aspect of this experience is that you know the effort put in will extend and improve someone’s life.”

Micci Davy – Mt. A’s Incoming Shinerama Campaign Chair

“In my two years here at Mt. A, I’ve participated in Shinerama as both a volunteer and site leader. What really stands out for me is how the campaign is entirely student-run, and how much the volunteers come to genuinely care about the cause. The campaign emphasizes the education and awareness of cystic fibrosis (CF), helping to demonstrate why the funds we raise are so important. Through volunteering, I’ve gotten to learn so much about the disease itself, and how Shine has been able to contribute to the advancement of research and treatment for CF since the campaign started 50 years ago. Seeing an initiative that is entirely student-driven accomplish so much is such a huge motivator. Overall, Shinerama encompasses so many of the best parts of Mt. A, creating a fun and impactful space that anyone can get involved in, and I think that’s what makes it so amazing, and so successful.”
