Ghosts hits store shelves, aims to shake up genre

Will the new Call of Duty give new life to first-person shooters?

Just when gamers thought that they could get back to their schoolwork after finishing Grand Theft Auto V, another significant title was released on Tuesday. Ghosts, part of the Call of Duty franchise, was developed by Infinity Ward, whose last game was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Infinity Ward hopes that the game will revive the ailing first-person shooter genre.

Infinity Ward’s executive producer Mark Rubin said that the player plays as a character dressed in a military ghost uniform, known only as Hesh. The trailer reveals that the player is able to assume control of an attack dog that can sneak into enemy bases and cause chaos during the campaign.

Although the game was released only two days ago, numerous details have either been leaked or released about the game’s multiplayer mode. The multiplayer in the Call of Duty games is the most renowned in the first-person shooter (FPS) genre; Infinity Ward hopes to maintain their reputation with their latest instalment. However, where the Call of Duty franchise has remained consistent with its core mechanics, most fans will find that Ghosts is a step away from its normal gameplay. A significant change is that maps can now be altered or destroyed; for example, skyscrapers may fall in the middle of a battle, encouraging intense, close-quarter gameplay. Additionally, “Capture the Flag” and “Hardpoint” are not featured in Ghosts’ multiplayer mode; instead, Infinity Ward has introduced seven new game modes. An example of a new game mode is “Blitz,” in which a player needs to go to a portal located at the enemy’s spawn point while preventing opposing players from reaching theirs. These portals are temporarily closed when they are captured to prevent players from rushing.

For fans of the “Nazi Zombies” mode, there is now “Extinction Mode”, which was created for those who enjoy completing levels with exponentially increasing enemies. Similar to the previous games’ zombies, Ghosts features aliens. However, unlike zombies, players are not be able to survive this mode alone. Each player has a special ability to destroy the aliens faster. The Tank has twenty-five per cent more health, the Weapon Specialist does twenty per cent more damage, and each team needs a Medic, . For the many gamers who are likely to miss “Nazi Zombies” mode, “Extinction” might be an adequate replacement.

Ghosts will be released on both the current generation and next-generation consoles. While the Xbox One will be running at 720p, the PlayStation 4 will have a higher quality, running at 1080p. However, both will be running at sixty frames per second, allowing immersive gameplay, and bringing some new life to the FPS genre, which has seen its formerly massive fan-base dwindle.
