Balance is More Than Standing on One Leg

At the beginning of this month Mental Health Intern Hanna Fuzesi hosted an amazing session on Balancing Mental Health. If you missed it, no worries! I will be outlining the main points she made throughout this article. As exam season is right around the corner, maintaining balance and healthy boundaries becomes crucial. Balance is how we do the things we have to and want to do in the given hours we have in a day. This includes all aspects of our life like physical, social, mental, and economic. Why does balance matter? Without balance life can be overwhelming to say the least. It can be difficult to make decisions and handle a variety of challenges.

We not only need to understand why it matters but also what it looks like. It means being able to fully engage in what we need or want to do without the worry that we should be doing something else. It means having a deeper understanding of our own boundaries that we set for ourselves. I know for myself this semester has been exhausting, but at the same time it seems to be flying by. I have been working to remind myself that the breaks I take from schoolwork are beneficial to my overall productivity. Sometimes the best thing you can do while studying is put it on pause and come back reenergized. A technique that works well for me is rather than focusing all my energy on working on one class for an extended period of time I work in increments, cycling through work from multiple classes. I find this allows me to get more done without being too drained.

There is more than one way to balance, and it is an individual matter; one mold does not fit all. It can also be shown in many ways such as saying no without guilt, clearly communicating wants and needs, and acting in terms of your beliefs and values. Finding balance is something that takes time, and the key is to not try changing everything all at once. Small steps over time can really help with introducing these positive life habits!

Word of the week: Zumba. It is a full body workout that incorporates dancing, stretching, and music. Every Tuesday on Zoom at 7:30 PM, Navigate MTA is hosting a free Zumba class presented by Adrie, a current Mount Allison student. There is no previous experience required! This is a great program to add to your week and may fit in with your balance goals!

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, suggestions for the word of the week, or topics you want to hear more about or are interested in volunteering for the Health Matters Society, please email me at [email protected]. Until next week. Stay positive, stay healthy, and stay safe!
