Mounties frisbee finish season

Frisbee Mounties play well in their final tournament in Halifax

Mount Allison’s ultimate frisbee team capped off their season last weekend, with their best tournament of the year. Over April 2 and 3, Mt. A competed in a total of seven games at the Tournament of Fools in Halifax, N.S. Coming into the tournament as the eleventh seed, Mt. A defeated Acadia and Dalhousie before narrowly grinding out a tough, one-point overtime victory over St. FX. Entering the day on Sunday as the only university team in a reseeded top-eight bracket, Mt. A was a true underdog. After three incredibly entertaining and challenging games, Mt. A finished seventh.

In totality, Mt. A won five games and lost only two. All but one of the Mounties’ victories were by a very slim margin, which is representative of the team’s ability to play their best when the game is on the line. All the players on the field and on the sidelines were very vocal and kept a high level of intensity all weekend, demonstrating tremendous team spirit.

Fourth-year captain Andrew Johnston looks back fondly on his four years playing Mt. A ultimate, and is very optimistic about the future of the team. “This weekend was the perfect way to cap off our season. Over my past four years, Mt. A ultimate has really come a long way from where it once was. I’m very proud of everyone who committed to the team this year, and I have full faith that next year’s leadership will be able to keep that momentum going.”

Ultimate frisbee is not a highly regarded sport, but it is quickly increasing in popularity. Mt. A is making a name for itself as a highly competitive university ultimate team, especially considering its relatively smaller student body in comparison to other maritime Universities. Over the weekend, Mt. A competed against some of the premier players in the region, and finished as the top-ranked university team in the tournament.

Mt. A’s remarkable camaraderie amongst all its players was on full display at the tournament. Their teamwork, aggressive mentality and high level of athleticism were large factors in how they defied the odds and broke seed. The team has drastically improved since September as a result of its dedicated players, who have worked vigorously to improve their game. Fourth-year captains Andrew Johnston and Brent Wallace will have to continue playing ultimate elsewhere. However, with many first-year players and other returning students, the future is very bright for Mt. A ultimate.
