Mounties men’s basketball team is closing up the season

Heading into the ACAA championships

Mount Allison’s men’s basketball team sits in third place overall in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) with 22 points. The team currently has 11 wins over eight losses this season, with two regular-season games remaining. The team’s most recent games include two back-to-back matches this past weekend, with a win against the Crandall Chargers and a loss against the Holland Hurricanes.

“Of the 14-member roster, 10 players only have one year or less playing experience in the ACAA,” said Steve Chapman, the head basketball coach. “This makes the Mounties the second-youngest team in the nine-team conference. This youth, combined with the veteran play of fourth-year players Jeshua Becker, Yanniv Perez and Mack Chisholm, as well as third-year point guard Seong Woo Park, has led the Mounties to yet another successful season in the ACAA.”

Crandall currently sits just under Mt. A in the standings – fourth place, overall, with 20 points. The team’s victory against Crandall on Feb. 9 ended with a final score of 95-52. Aram Currie, a second-year chemistry student and shooting guard, led the team with 22 points. Alongside Currie was Yanniv Perez, a third-year commerce student and shooting guard, with 14 points, as well as Sam Pierson, a first-year chemistry student and forward, with 13. The team’s rebound leaders for the game included James French, a second-year psychology student and forward, who had 14 points, and Mack Chisholm, a fourth-year commerce student and forward, with eight points.

The Mountie’s last game against Holland on Feb. 10 ended in a close loss, resulting in a final score of 84-77. Holland sits in first place with 34 points, providing the Mounties with a challenging game. Despite the tough loss, French lead the team with nine rebounds and 25 points. Jeshua Becker, a fourth-year environmental science student, forward and shooting guard, added 16 points to the score, and Pierson picked up seven rebounds.

In January, Mt. A’s Brett Curtis and Aram Currie were both named Athlete of the Week. Curtis, a second-year chemistry student and point guard, received the title for the week of Jan. 21. Currie held the title for the week of Jan. 7.

Chapman claimed the combination of rookies and veterans on the team contributed to their success. “Our future is incredibly bright with so many returning players next year. With improved play, continued progress and hard work, we believe we can make a real run in this year’s playoffs. We want to finish our season off with a couple of wins to keep building momentum as we approach playoffs. We have some renewed confidence right now.”

The team’s efforts this season have put them in a 2018-19 ACAA basketball championship playoff position. The weekend-long event is set for March 1 to 3 at Crandall University.

The Mounties’ next game will be hosted by the University of King’s College this Sunday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. Their final game of the regular season will be against St.Thomas University, next Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. here in Sackville.
