Other Mounties sports action

The women’s volleyball team had their season opener Sunday against the DAL AC Rams in Truro. The young Mountie squad got a big victory to start the season three sets to one over the Rams. In a tight affair the Mounties lost the first set but came storming back to win the next three. They were led by fourth-year players Sydney Umlah and Lynne Arsenault, both having seven kills in the match, with Arsenault also having eight digs. The Mounties have their home opener Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
The football Mounties were in action last weekend taking on the St. FX X-Men on Saturday. The Mounties unfortunately fell by a score of 24-18. Despite the loss, the Mounties still clinched top spot in the AUS and after a bye week will host the Loney Bowl. The Mounties were led by Quinn Leblanc, who ran for 102 and a touchdown, and Josh Hicks, who had 66 yards receiving and a touchdown. Ryan Lambert went three for three on field goal attempts, with one conversion scoring 10 points for the Mounties.
The women’s hockey Mounties had two games in the past week, coming away with two hard fought victories. Last Monday, Oct. 28 the Mounties defeated Moncton 3-1 at the Sackville Arena. Goals were scored by Kelly Matarazzo, Shelby Colton and Rosie Heffernan. Goaltender Keri Martin delivered another great performance making 37 saves to earn the win. On Sunday, Nov. 1 the Mounties won a long grueling double overtime game against St. Thomas in Fredericton. Regulation goals by Kelsey Taylor and Shelby Colton had the game 2-2 going into overtime. Captain Mackenzie Lalonde scored the game winner in overtime giving the Mounties the 3-2 victory. Goaltender Keri Martin was solid again making 31 saves in the victory. Next game for the Mounties is Friday, Nov. 6 in Halifax against Saint Mary’s.
The Mounties lacrosse team was in action Saturday against the UNB Buccaneers. The Mounties fell short 15-5 as the inexperienced team continues to develop.
The men’s rugby team played their final regular season game, falling to St. Thomas. This was the end of a tough season in the win-loss department, but there are other good things that come from being part of the team.
