The Mounties will look to bounce back from an up-and-down start to the semester
The women’s volleyball Mounties have had an up-and-down start to the second half of their season. They began with a three-sets-to-one win over Holland College. After losing the first set handily, the Mounties bounced back to scratch out the next three closely contested sets. The team was led by Sydney Umlah and Rachel Van Gestel with seven and six kills, respectively. Lauren Wentzell also added 16 assists. This victory was followed by two tough losses to UNBSJ and St. Thomas, both by a score of three sets to zero. Kayla Vande Kemp and Lynne Arsenault led the way with 10 and 12 kills combined in the two games, respectively, and Wentzell added 27 assists. The Mounties currently sit in a tie for third in the ACAA and will look to move up Friday against the top-ranked Mount Saint Vincent Mystics.
In men’s basketball action, the Mounties had a rough start to the second half, losing three straight. The first loss was against the UNBSJ Seawolves by a score of 78-74. The Mounties were led by Adam Spurrell with 15 points and five rebounds. They then faced the undefeated Holland College Hurricanes on the backend of a tough back-to-back and fell 91-68. Bradley Fuller scored 19 points and pulled down five rebounds while Jeshua Becker added 12 points off the bench in the loss. This past weekend, the Mounties traveled to Halifax for a game against the MSVU Mystics. Falling 90-68, the Mounties saw a strong performance again from Bradley Fuller, who scored 24 points and managed seven rebounds. The Mounties will look to regain their winning ways Saturday at home, against St. Thomas.
The Mounties’ women’s basketball also had an up-and-down past two weeks, winning one out of three to start their second half. Coming into the break undefeated, the Mounties continued their winning ways beating UNBSJ 56-37. Guard Sarah McGeachy scored 13 points, helping the Mounties to victory. The Mounties then matched up against the Holland College Hurricanes in a battle of the two top teams in the league. The Mounties fell just short by a score of 73-61 for their first loss of the season. Sarah McGeachy and Erin Steeves led the attack for the Mounties, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively. In the third game, the Mounties suffered a tough loss to the MSVU Mystics 58-38. Kiersten Mangold put up eight points and two steals in the loss. The Mounties will look to regain their first-half form in their next game Saturday against St. Thomas.
