Win and loss for the Mounties as playoffs loom

Arsenault has a great weekend as Mounties beat up on Rams and fall to Hurricanes:

On Saturday, the women’s varsity volleyball Mounties faced a tough challenge against the second-place Holland College Hurricanes. The Mounties fought hard and in stretches of the game were the better team, but ultimately fell three sets to one.

The first set saw the Mounties come out strong with a lot of energy and catching the Hurricanes flatfooted. They built an early lead because of solid passing, which led to kills by Lynne Arsenault and Kayla Vande Kemp. The Mounties built a lead as large as six points before a late surge by the Hurricanes cut the lead to two. The Mounties regained the momentum after a hard crosscourt kill by Morgan Bulman forced a Holland College timeout. They used this momentum to seal the first set 25-21.

The second set was back-andforth throughout, with both teams going on short runs to take the lead, only to see the other team regain it. The Mounties played great defence at the beginning of the set, forcing

The third and fourth sets were very similar as the Mounties fought hard but the Hurricanes raised their level of play and started to show why they are the second-ranked team in the ACAA. The third set ended 25-13 and the fourth, 25-17. Despite the lopsided score lines, the Mounties never looked as though they were out of the game, forcing the Hurricanes to earn every point in both sets. the Hurricanes to hit extra shots and often forcing errors. As the set progressed, both teams began to play somehwat sloppily and errors started to creep into both teams’ play. The Mounties found themselves tied at 22 but a couple errors and some miscommunications led to three straight points by the Hurricanes, and the Mounties fell 25-22.

The third and fourth sets were very similar as the Mounties fought hard but the Hurricanes raised their level of play and started to show why they are the second-ranked team in the ACAA. The third set ended 25-13 and the fourth, 25-17. Despite the lopsided score lines, the Mounties never looked as though they were out of the game, forcing the Hurricanes to earn every point in both sets.

This match again showed that this Mounties team is not far off from the top-ranked teams in the ACAA. The Mounties have given the Hurricanes one of their three losses on the season and continue to develop their young roster. Arsenault led the team with six kills and added 12 digs. Vande Kemp also added five kills and 12 digs.

In their other game of the weekend, the Mounties were victorious three sets to one over the Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture Rams. Arsenault continued her great weekend, leading the team with an outstanding 16 kills and three service aces. Lauren Wentzell and Madison Archibald facilitated the offence with 23 and 11 assists, respectively. The Mounties now have 11 wins and nine losses on the season that has them sitting in fourth place in the ACAA. Their final game of the season is Saturday, Feb. 20 against the St. Thomas Tommies at home. This game will have large playoff implications for the Mounties.
